When the Web Cannot Answer for Your Business

Every AI Fix piece follows the same five steps

The Customer Who Leaves Before Calling

At 9:40 on a weeknight in Tobago, a visitor tries to confirm whether a small supplier opens early enough to collect an item before the morning ferry. One page has old hours; another has only a phone number; a scanned flyer shows last year’s promotion. The customer cannot tell what is current, and an AI search assistant has even less to use.

That is the quiet problem beneath Trinidad and Tobago’s digital shift: many businesses are online, but their knowledge is not in a form machines can read, compare, verify, and answer from.

Digital Readiness Is Becoming a Business Standard

According to Trinidad & Tobago Chamber of Industry & Commerce’s awards criteria, the SME category consists of two awards for a small and a medium-sized company, with nominees assessed on areas including effective use of technology and digital media for engagement. Digital engagement is no longer decoration; it is part of how performance is judged.

The public sector is also moving the expectation line. When interviewed, Mr. Justice Ivor Archie, Chief Justice, noted that "We have made the transition to e-delivery of justice quite successfully, and the expectations and desires of our clients have now shifted towards full acceptance." If users expect e-delivered justice, they will not indefinitely tolerate businesses dependent on paper files, outdated posts, or a callback from the one person who knows.

For many SMEs, the gap is structured, current, accessible information: opening hours, service boundaries, product details, delivery rules, forms, prices where appropriate, eligibility criteria, and after-sales processes. When these facts sit in paper folders, image flyers, inboxes, and old documents, even a good website becomes a shopfront with a locked storeroom.

The Manual Web Has Hit Its Limit

The traditional fix is to redesign the website, upload more documents, and ask staff to update pages. That works only when information is small, stable, and centrally owned. It collapses when details change across locations, seasons, stock, regulations, or service teams.

Customers now ask situational questions: whether a service applies in a district, whether a document is enough, whether an item can be delivered by a deadline, or whether two services can be combined. A static page can display facts, but it cannot reliably interpret open-ended requests and answer from approved material.

According to Address of the Honourable the Chief Justice Mr. Justice Ivor Archie, O.R.T.T.’s analysis, 2021-11-09, the judiciary recognized the need to transition from a paper-based environment to leveraging technology to support more rational, streamlined, and effective workflows and processes. The lesson for commerce is blunt: when knowledge is trapped in paper or fragmented workflows, digital service is structurally limited. AI can extract meaning from messy material, connect facts, detect contradictions, and turn scattered content into a usable knowledge layer.

A Living Knowledge Layer for Local Firms

The practical AI solution would not begin with a flashy chatbot. It would begin with controlled intake of approved information: brochures, catalogues, service lists, forms, policy notes, location details, delivery terms, menus, notices, and frequent customer queries. The system would extract facts, classify them, and ask a human to confirm what is public, current, and authoritative.

From there, the business gains a machine-readable knowledge base. A customer assistant could answer natural-language questions using only verified information, cite the source internally, and refuse to invent answers. The same base could support digital forms, staff service desks, searchable websites, and structured listings.

More importantly, AI could show what the business does not know: conflicting opening hours, missing delivery areas, expired documents, unclear refund terms, or repeated customer questions with no published answer. For local firms, digital presence becomes an operating system for trust.

What AI Cannot Repair

AI cannot make poor records true, settle who owns customer data, guarantee broadband reliability, or replace management discipline. It will not fix a service promise the business cannot fulfil, nor should it publish sensitive information without governance. Firms still need privacy, cybersecurity, content approval, and maintenance policies.

The New Meaning of Being Findable

The country’s wider institutions show that digital delivery changes expectations, not just channels. Once people experience services that can be searched, submitted, tracked, and delivered electronically, they bring the same assumptions to private businesses.

The late-night customer in Tobago may never know whether a supplier lost the sale because its information was missing, outdated, or unreadable. To the machine helping that customer decide, all three look much the same. In an AI-shaped marketplace, silence will often be interpreted as absence.
